(Sept. 24) — Seven elephants have been killed by a speeding freight train in eastern India, after two baby elephants strayed onto the tracks and older ones followed to try to save them.

The deadly collision happened under a full moon late Wednesday in West Bengal between two protected wildlife zones where trains are supposed to slow down, USA Today reported. More than 20 elephants have died there in a little over a year, chief state forest conservator Atanu Raha told Agence France-Presse.

People gather Thursday near one of the elephants that was killed by a train in India’s West Bengal state.

But the number of animals killed in a single accident this week was “unprecedented and shocking,” the World Wildlife Fund’s local director in West Bengal, Sashwati Sen, told The Times of India. Local forest officials are preparing a report on the accident and plan to meet India’s railway minister next week, the paper reported.

“One of the elephants was dragged for about 400 meters (yards), while the other four died on the spot,” district official Kalyan Das told India Today. Two others were severely injured and died hours later, he said. “It is a ghastly sight,” forest conservator S. Patel told the same paper. The baby elephants were among the dead.

Tracks between New Jalpaiguri and Assam were blocked for several hours Thursday by other elephants from the same herd who rushed to the scene to guard the seven dead bodies and an eighth animal who was wounded but survived, AFP reported.

Notes from Chelsea:
This is a tradgedy worse than a thousand human deaths, the fact that they are not a part of the human race makes them all the more speacial. These Elephants are en-dangered because of us.
We, as humans, hunt and kill them for their tusks of ivory, and if you, personally are not killing the elephants, you are contributing to the killing of them, by buying the products from the elephants,
and buying from the killers possibly indirectly…. but you need to know where your products are coming from, always.  These poor elephants, are just trying to survive, in the overpopulated human world, just because we have the guns, we think we are at the top of the food chain, but guns just make us weak.
We hide behind our creations, allowing them to kill and injure, allowing these creations, to pollute our world and furthur harm everyone with the toxins they release.
The elephants among many animals try to stay out of our way, because they learn the dangers of us and our inventions through death and sickness… Is this just the price to pay for the human race to keep growing?
Are we that much above everything else that “our” existance comes first? Does it come first to the poor animals suffering in our massive, destructive wake?? Is it their fault they are dying? Are they just too dumb to stay out the way?
Or are we too dumb to be able to save them, and watch out for them. These animals have been living the same way for years… who are we to come in and change that? We need to cater to their needs and their natural habitats first, that is the only way we can stop tradgedy happening by fault of the human race and its creations.
